The printing process is subtle and unpredictable. A common artifact is the movement out of register of each coloured plate on the press. The graphic artist needs to be aware that as each colour is put down, it may move relative to other colours.

In order that the stock does not show through the design in an unwanted way we use bleeds, traps and overprints. When the artist can bring the process into harmony with the design, a thing of beauty is created.

This emblem was taken from a Gudang Garam cigarette packet. Here we see a gold ground, overprinted with dark blue and red. The design is also embossed to accent the outline of the blue rounded border.
