Seeing the Helvetica movie got me thinking about type faces and I searched around for some examples i've collected over the years. This logotype is taken from the cover of the Linotype One-Line Specimens print manual.

The book is a catalogue of type faces aimed at showing a printer what is available. I like it because it shows many old style faces that are rarely seen these days. There's also a nice collection of alternates. These are imaginative symbols based on the basic forms of the type, though not in the style of Dingbats.

Alternates are like the dreams that a type designer has when they fall asleep at night. Glyphs float freely and become intertwined to make strange new forms.
